Wake up early and hit the trail — these five routes reward you with golden light over the lake and views you won’t forget. South Lake Tahoe has no shortage of stunning trails, but there’s something special about catching first light on the water.
1. Eagle Falls Trail
Just a short drive from the inn, Eagle Falls is one of the most accessible sunrise spots in the area. The trailhead sits right off Highway 89, and within the first half mile you’re rewarded with a waterfall and sweeping views of Emerald Bay below.
Start early — parking fills up fast in summer, and the light is best between 6:00 and 7:30 AM. The trail is moderate, with some rocky sections, but nothing that requires technical gear.
2. Rubicon Trail to Vikingsholm
If you want a longer morning, the Rubicon Trail offers a gentle, shaded path that hugs the shoreline before descending to Vikingsholm — a 38-room castle built in 1929. The views from above are some of the best in the basin.
Pack a light layer. Mornings at elevation can be cool even in July, and the trail stays shaded for the first mile or so before opening up to the water.
3. Cascade Falls
A quick, family-friendly out-and-back that takes about an hour round trip. The payoff is a 200-foot cascade that catches the morning sun beautifully. It’s best in late spring when snowmelt is at its peak.
“We caught the falls right at sunrise and had the whole trail to ourselves. One of the highlights of our trip.”— Guest review, June 2025
4. Bayview Trail
This one climbs steeply but quickly, gaining about 600 feet in under a mile. The reward is a panoramic view of Emerald Bay, Cascade Lake, and the distant peaks of Desolation Wilderness. On a clear morning, you can see all the way to the far shore.
5. Inspiration Point
Perhaps the most classic viewpoint in all of Tahoe. The short walk from the parking area to the overlook takes less than ten minutes, making it ideal if you prefer your sunrises with coffee in hand rather than hiking boots on feet.
