South Lake Tahoe in November is the month the whole town takes a breath. Summer’s over, the snow usually hasn’t shown up in earnest, and the whole town goes into fix-everything-before-winter mode. It’s also, if you know what you’re doing, one of the best months to be here: the lake to yourself, the restaurants wide open, and the lowest rates of the year. Here’s what’s actually open, what isn’t, and what I’d come for.
What’s open and what’s closed
- Beaches: open, and the paid lots stop charging. Lakeside Beach is a couple of minutes’ walk from our door and you’ll have it mostly to yourself.
- The Heavenly gondola: ran sightseeing through the first weekend of November, then it’s quiet until the resort opens for the season. Target opening day is Friday, November 20.
- Restaurants: a lot of places trim hours in November. Some close for breakfast, some close Sundays, and that includes us: Toulouse closes for breakfast on weekdays this month while the kitchen does the deep clean and maintenance it can’t do in summer or in January. Dinner is on. Check the current hours before you walk over.
- At the hotel: the hot tub is open all year, November included. The pool closes for the season. The fire pits stay lit all winter, so there’s always a warm spot outside.
Heavenly opening day, and what the first weekend is really like
Heavenly is targeting November 20. What that weekend feels like depends on one thing: how much snow is on the ground. If there’s a real base and the mountain opens with more than two runs, it’s an amazing time to be in Tahoe. If it’s two runs and one lift and it rained on Thursday, it’s not. Last year the resort opened on Monday, November 24 with a partial mountain and a rainy start, and the town stayed quiet until the storms arrived in December.
Here’s roughly what that looks like at the hotel: opening Saturday we’re usually a bit over half full, and the weekdays around it are nearly empty. That’s close to having the hotel to yourself, at the lowest rates of the year. If the forecast shows snow the week of the 20th, book. If it doesn’t, come anyway and read the next section.

Thanksgiving week
Thanksgiving is the same bet on snow, with families on top of it. If the mountain’s open, people take the Friday off and ski as a family Friday, Saturday and Sunday. I did that as a kid and it’s still what the week looks like here. If it’s raining, people stay home.
The turn is sharp. The Monday and Tuesday before Thanksgiving we’re usually about a third full. Thanksgiving Thursday, Friday and Saturday we’re essentially sold out. Then Sunday the whole town empties. It’s the same shape every year. So the week has two personalities: a quiet, cheap first half and a sold-out holiday. If you want the holiday, book Thursday through Saturday early. If you want the quiet, come Sunday through Wednesday and you’ll pay a lot less for the same room.
The bigger picture: Thanksgiving and the first couple of weeks of December are a lighter version of the holidays. Christmas through New Year’s is a zoo here. Late November gives you the lights, the first snow, the full-mountain energy on the holiday weekend, and none of the crush.
The best thing about November that nobody books for
You can get into everything. This is the thing I wish more people knew. In summer, the good restaurants in town book out days or weeks ahead. In November you walk in. Gordon Ramsay Hell’s Kitchen and Wolf by Vanderpump at the casinos, Chart House up on Kingsbury Grade with the view, the good steakhouses: no line, no reservation panic, a table by the window. If you’ve ever wanted to do the foodie version of Tahoe, November is when the town is yours.
A November rate worth knowing about
Midweek November is the cheapest you’ll see this hotel until spring, and you can see that for yourself by putting a Tuesday into the booking engine. On top of that, our Veterans Day offer goes live November 10, and we’re running it longer than usual this year because we want to say thank you properly to the people who served: 20% off with promo code VET2026, book between November 10 and 20, for stays November 10 through December 14. That covers Thanksgiving week and the first two weeks of December. It’ll be on the offers page the morning of the 10th.
